A study by the Good Housekeeping Institute (GHI) found that dusting, mopping and cleaning the bathroom are all effective ways to burn calories without having to invest in a gym membership – or actually get dressed.

The study involve five participants tracking their activity via an exercise monitor as they carried out common cleaning tasks.

The results showed that on average, testers burned 602 calories with two hours of dusting, mopping, cleaning the bathroom, vacuuming and window cleaning, compared with just 374 calories lost during a 5km run.

The highest calorie killer was a 40-minute dusting task which burned 194 calories, while 20 minutes of window cleaning cuts 115 calories. Your 20-minute bathroom blitz could be burning100 calories, while vacuuming for the same length of time used up 86 calories.

And when it comes to the big declutter and cleaning sessions, there's a particularly shiny silver lining...

'Unfortunately, there are some labour-intensive chores that need to be done at least once a year,' according to GHI cleaning expert Verity Mann, 'but the good news is that you will be getting fit while you're doing them.'

So, maybe it's time to ditch those running shoes and invest in a few extra dusters!
