Grocery store creates embarrassing plastic bags to prevent customer use

A Vancouver grocery store that specializes in natural products has taken a creative route to encourage customers to bring reusable shopping bags. East West Market, has decided to only offer plastic bags that are emblazoned with embarrassing, fake store names. The campaign, launched earlier this month, has the slogan, “Avoid the shame. Bring a reusable bag.” David Lee Kwen, owner of the store, says the campaign has successfully caused a 30 per cent surge in customers that bring their own reusable bags. The store’s decision comes just as Prime Minster Justin Trudeau announced his plan to ban single-use plastic by 2021. According to Plastic Oceans Foundation Canada, nearly three billion plastic bags are used each year in Canada.
