Kate Middleton and Prince William Had the Most Potentially Awkward Run-In at the BAFTAs

Though the Oscars already has its fair share of drama (No host! No Timothée!), nothing can compare to the element of surprise of a real-life crossover event. Enter, the British Film and Television Awards.

While scheduling conflicts (ahem, Grammys) left the evening slightly overshadowed, the BAFTAs gave us everything and more, including a meeting of fictional Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) and the very authentic Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Queen Colman (who beat out both Lady Gaga and Glenn Close for the evening’s honor of Best Leading Actress), currently reigns as The Favourite’s temperamental Queen Anne, but soon (though Netflix is keeping the deets close to its chest), she’ll be welcomed into homes worldwide as The Crown’s Elizabeth II, a hand-off from acclaimed predecessor Claire Foy.

The beloved Netflix series really goes there when it comes to portraying the royal family and the conflicts and controversies of the day. But Will and Kate being the polite Brits they are (who have also conveniently not yet factored into The Crown’s narrative), welcomed Colman with open arms on the red carpet.

Like, we know Colman’s a good actress, but you can’t manufacture this kind of joy:

Unfortunately, we can’t hear what they’re saying, but from the looks of it, there was nothing of a “How dare you impersonate my grandmother!”-variety stand-off.

But oh, if you thought this was where the BAFTAs-Crown drama came to an end, you are mistaken. For this photo of Foy smirking at a passing Prince William still exists, and by God, it’s incredible:
