Three people are dead, including boys aged four and 13, after the minivan they were in collided with a semi on the Trans-Canada Highway just outside of Portage la Prairie.

RCMP say the eastbound minivan was trying to make a left turn to head north on Highway 16 around 1:15 p.m. when it collided with a westbound semi.

There were five people in the van, all from Carberry, Man.

Two were pronounced dead at the scene, a 13-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man. A four-year-old boy was taken to hospital, but has since died.

The driver, a 36-year-old woman, and a nine-year-old boy remain in hospital in critical but stable condition.

The semi driver, a 62-year-old Ontario man, sustained minor injuries.

STARS Air Ambulance was called to the scene.

RCMP say everyone was wearing seatbelts and alcohol is not a factor.

Traffic is delayed in the area as as RCMP investigate.
