Police said they were contacted by a member of the city's Congolese community about the assault, which happened in early July, and the video.

The victim is also a member of Ottawa's Congolese community, police said. They added that they received emails from around the world urging them to investigate the video.

The video shows the victim in a bathroom, being interrogated by another woman who accuses her of having sex with her boyfriend.

The video then shows the victim being pinned down by several women and then sexually assaulted with various objects. The attackers speak in Lingala, a Bantu language spoken in both Congo-Kinshasa and Congo-Brazzaville.

Police did not specify which of the two African countries the community members involved were originally from.

CBC Ottawa reporters have seen parts of the video, as have police.

Victim 'crying all the time'

Henriette Yakibonge, an Ottawa sexual assault counsellor, said she's been in touch with the victim's mother and that the alleged attackers are known to the victim.

"The victim is not OK. She's not eating, she's not sleeping. she's crying all the time," said Yakibonge.

"Her mother is very angry the people who did that to her are friends of hers."

Eunice Ilunga, 40, is facing eight charges, including kidnapping, assault with a weapon, sexual assault and uttering death threats.
