Mariah Carey has found her own way to explain the New Year's Eve lip sync debacle.

In a Friday interview with the Associated Press, the singer said she believes she is held to a different standard, which is why her pre-ball drop performance flub turned into a global news story.

"I didn't obsess over the New Year's Eve thing," she said. "I mean, I was upset about the fact that people didn't understand, but it's like, I can only explain it like this to you."

She recalled how her in-ear piece and microphone malfunctioned, allowing her to only hear the screaming audience and delayed music.

"If my ears were in, maybe I could have heard music and... the show could have gone on," she said.

She added of the "wreck" of a New Year's Eve: "It's like I'm the only one that has to make five million comebacks... For me there's different rules, I don't know why. I don't know why it's not OK that I was just like victimized and vilified by the situation."

Carey made headlines with her Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest headlining set, when she removed her in-ear monitor and stopped singing and lip-syncing during her performances of hits hits "Emotions" and "We Belong Together."

The singer blamed the production team for her snafu, engaging in a back-and-forth battle with Dick Clark Productions.

"It's not going to stop me from doing a live event in the future," she said shortly after of the fallout. "But it will make me less trusting of using anyone outside of my own team."

On Wednesday night, Carey delivered her first TV performance since the troubled NYE show when she teamed up with YG to perform their new single "I Don't" on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
