Sept. 18, 1812: Fire of Moscow burns out

Around 12,000 people were killed in the Fire of Moscow that started on Sept. 14 when Russian troops and residents abandoned the city on the arrival of Napoleon, following the Battle of Borodino. It destroyed the Moscow State University, the National Library of Russia, Petrovsky and Arbatsky theaters, and some notable pieces of art.
