A tragic scene unfolded Thursday at a Burnaby townhome complex where Mounties say one person is dead after a shooting.

Burnaby RCMP said they received a report that a body was found inside a vehicle at 7420 Mulberry Place at the Burnaby Lougheed Lions Housing Society Co-op.

The call came in around noon after reports of shots fired near Cariboo Road and 16th Avenue, Burnaby RCMP said.

Residents said they heard what sounded like gunshots just after 8 a.m. The victim's car was idling for hours in the underground parkade.

Upon finding the body, police said the shooting appears targeted.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the investigation.

Friends told Global News the victim is a 17-year-old boy.

Family and friends of the victim gathered near the taped-off shooting scene, openly sobbing and calling this death tragic and unnecessary.

At approximately 9:15 a.m. Thursday a White Nissan Rogue was reported to have been set on fire in the area of 173 Street and 101 Avenue in Surrey. IHIT is working with Integrated Forensic Identification Section (IFIS) to determine if the two incidents are connected.

Talal Sahash lives just a few doors down from where the victim lived and says he's never seen anything like this in the five years since he moved to the quiet, friendly neighbourhood.

"It's very safe and to witness such a thing is very disturbing," Sahash told Global News.

"Lots of kids, most of the houses here have kids."

Friends and family of the victim tell Global News the victim was in grade 12, set to graduate this year and was studying to become an electrician.

Burnaby RCMP taped off the entrance to the underground parkade.

Police said there are no further risks to the public but have also not confirmed if anyone was arrested.

"Homicide investigators are looking for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam video in the area of the 7400 block of Mulberry Place," Cpl. Michael Kalanj said.

"If you have dashcam video in the area over the last few days, please contact IHIT."
