The pregnant wife of a pastor has died after being shot during a suspected burglary in Indiana, police said.

Amanda Blackburn, 28, was found fatally wounded in the apparent home invasion in Indianapolis on Tuesday morning.

Her one-year-old toddler son was in the house at the time, but was not injured.

Mrs Blackburn, who was 12 weeks pregnant, was taken off a hospital ventilator and declared dead on Thursday.

Her husband, Davey Blackburn, found their home broken into and his wife wounded when he returned from the gym, said their church.

Indianapolis Metro Police Sgt Kendale Adams told ABC News: "Our detectives believe this was a robbery likely to have gone foul.

"They are following up on several promising leads but at this point, they have not released suspect information."

Police are investigating whether the incident is connected to another burglary hours earlier nearby on the city's northwest side in which electronics were stolen.

Mr Blackburn said on the website of the Resonate Church, which the couple both founded: "My wife was such a beautiful, gracious, loving woman of God.

"I have not only lost my ministry partner and support but also my very best friend."

The pastor added: "I hold firm to the belief that God is still good, that he takes our tragedy and turns it into triumph."

The couple met during a blind date to a Christian rock concert and "pretty much clicked right away", according to video posted to the church's website.

The couple's Christian church said in a statement: "We have extremely heavy hearts and although we are hurting tremendously, we are still hoping and believing that great things are still yet to come."

It has launched a fund to support the family.

Ryan McConnell, the neighbourhood watch captain, told WTTV: "She's just such a loving mom and he's just a swell guy, so for this to happen to them is just devastating to all of us in the neighbourhood."
