Vegas GM calls out teams afraid of expansion draft: ‘Negotiate your way out of this’

The Vegas Golden Knights expansion draft will be Wednesday, and many high-profile NHL players are up for grabs.

The Golden Knights are allowed to choose a total of 30 players in Wednesday's draft, which leaves the other 30 NHL teams nervous for their available players.

But Vegas general manager George McPhee has a simple solution for those teams that don't want to part with their star players.

"You can negotiate your way out of this if you wish," McPhee said, via the Associated Press. "Every team in this league has a chance to protect their roster."

McPhee did say he and the Golden Knights won't snag a player until they talk to all the teams, which means he is willing to work with everyone so that no one is blindsided or gets a raw deal.

"We can put a competitive team on the ice and accumulate draft picks," McPhee said, via the Knights Twitter account. "We really like what we’re looking at right now."

The protected lists were revealed Sunday morning and distinctly state which players are available and which are protected. McPhee can also negotiate deals with teams to not pick certain players, although there will certainly be a price tag attached.

McPhee seems ready to let the games — and negotiations — begin.

"It's been the most fun I've ever had," McPhee said. "To build an NHL franchise from scratch is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

"We're going to put our team together and watch it come to life in front of us."
