Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Toronto and all of southern Ontario starting Monday, with hot and humid conditions enveloping the area.

The heat is expected to persist until Wednesday.

Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach 31 C, with humidity pushing it to around 40 C, Environment Canada says.

The agency said overnight temperatures are expected to be in the low twenties, providing some relief.

They remind people that risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

Environment Canada also urges people to drink plenty of water and stay in cool areas, and to never leave pets or people inside hot cars.
