Environment Canada is urging caution for people in the Calgary area and southern Alberta, with fog advisories pointing to "near zero visibility."

"If travelling, be prepared for areas of near-zero visibility. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop," the agency said Wednesday afternoon.

"An area of dense fog persists over portions of southern Alberta. Within the fog there is also a risk of patchy freezing drizzle. Visibilities are expected to improve this afternoon and then worsen once again overnight tonight."

The Calgary airport experienced delays, cancellations and flight diversions from fog Tuesday evening, prompting warnings from airlines to check the status of flights.
