A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for parts of Alberta including Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park.

Environment Canada expects severe thunderstorms to develop Sunday afternoon.

The storms may create strong wind gusts, hail and heavy rain that could damage buildings, trees and vehicles. Very large hail could also cause serious injury.

There is potential for some of the storms to produce a tornado. Weather alerts will be updated online if conditions change.

A heat warning issued for the Edmonton area on Thursday remains in effect.

Environment Canada was advising people to stay out of the sun and drink plenty of water. The agency warned that pets and people should not be left inside closed vehicles, ever.

Watch out for symptoms of heat stroke, which include lack of sweat, confusion, fainting and unconsciousness. More health advice is available at the Alberta Health website.
