"The SUV market continues to grow with the ‘all year round lifestyle’ appeal showing no signs of flagging," said hpi motoring expert Mark Bulmer. "Practicality, presence and efficiency have ensured that SUVs have become the vehicle of choice for families, easily meeting the demands of everyday life. However it’s during the winter months where SUVs can really prove their worth."

"The SUV sector remains one of the fastest growing and most exciting vehicle sectors and manufacturers are putting a great deal of emphasis on design, styling and performance to capitalise on this continuous growth," Bulmer said. "It’s not surprising that consumer appetite for SUVs remains high and there are some great models to be had to guarantee stylish yet great value motoring and great performance during harsh weather conditions."

A new one might be on the way but the second-hand market is full of these dependable workhorses. The iconic Defender can be bought from anywhere between £5,000 up to £75,000, with those priced around £10,000-£15,000 proving to be the most popular.

Toyota RAV4

It's a Toyota, so you know it'll be built well. The RAV4 holds its value well, too, alough hpi admits that it is neither the best off-roader nor the best car to use on the motorway. However, that make it the perfect compromise of both an an ideal all-rounder.

Porsche Macan

A relative newcomer to the SUV game, Porsche's baby off-roader combines sporty looks with functional performance. It's ideal for those who want that little bit of prestige, but without the higher prices and polarising looks of its bigger brother the Porsche Cayenne.

Volvo XC70

Unlike the others on this list the XC70 is an estate car, but one that is still very much an off-roader. Like all Volvos it's built like a tank and will be the perfect choice for the safety-conscious family, and it's also ideal for towing. Not everyone's cup of tea, but a perfect all-rounder.

Dacia Duster

The baby SUV if ever there was one. The Duster has firmly established itself and is holding its value well. Four-wheel-drive models are highly sought after in both petrol and diesel flavour, and build quality is decent too given the low cost. Prices start at £5,500 to arounf £14,000.
