And men in general are to blame for seven in 10 accidents.

Drivers named John are the most likely to cause accidents on UK roads, according to the latest research findings.

A study by law firm Your Legal Friend found that 70 percent of drivers who cause accidents are male, with those named John being the most likely to be at fault.

Men are also more likely to be the victim of an accident, though, accounting for 59 percent of all those falling foul of another driver’s incompetence.

The study busted a common myth about young drivers being a hazard on the road, too, with the statistics showing that 30-year-olds are the most likely to cause accidents, while 32-year-olds are most likely to be innocent victims.

The study also found that the most dangerous time to be on the road is during the evening rush hour on a Friday, as drivers find themselves in a hurry to get home and start the weekend. Perhaps surprisingly, though, June was found to be the most common month for accidents.

‘At one point or another, most people have experienced that heart-breaking moment of their first road accident. This study has revealed some rather interesting statistics, challenging a few common misconceptions about drivers in society today,’ said Philip Waters, a solicitor from Your Legal Friend.

‘These facts challenge stereotypes around women drivers and the elderly on the road, showing that men in their early thirties are the most likely to cause, and be involved in, road accidents. While no two drivers are the same, it would seem over-confidence on the road can be the most harmful trait for anyone, and that all drivers should ensure that safety is their first priority while out and about.’
