Families taking UK road trips face rip-off prices of up to 24p a litre more at motorway service stations compared with supermarkets.

Figures from the AA reveal drivers are paying up to 131.9p a litre at M-way forecourts while a cut-throat price war has kept costs down to as low as 107.7p locally.

The sky high cost can add £13 to the petrol bill for motorists filling up an average family hatchback on the motorway, the AA said.

Its Fuel Price Report also revealed pump prices can be a postcode lottery with forecourts on busy dual carriageways charging 117.9p a litre while the UK average is 116.5p for unleaded.

According to the research, those heading West over the upcoming Bank Holiday will get the fairest M-way petrol prices of around 117.9p a litre at service stations such as J27 on the M5 at Tiverton and J28 at Cullumpton while petrol is 122.9p at J23a on the M4 at Magor, Wales.

An AA spokesman said : “It shows how much fuel can vary in price and there’s no way of telling where the cheaper garages are - it’s a lottery out there.”

And AA president Edmund King added: “On motorways ridiculously high pump prices tar the image of all retailers on the network, which is clearly not the case for all – and could be remedied with Continental-style pump price transparency.”

The report revealed average pump prices have leapt by almost 2p a litre from 114.6p last month to 116.5p.

And diesel is up by just over 2p a litre from 115.4p to 117.45p.

The South East remains the nation’s dearest petrol region averaging 117p a litre for unleaded and 118p for diesel.

Northern Ireland is the cheapest at 115.5p for unleaded and 116.2p for diesel.
