As Beyonce shared the first picture of her precious twins she sparked confusion over what their names are.

In the picture published on Instagram this morning, the singer is dressed in an extravagant purple layered outfit and light blue veil as she cradles the adorable newborns.

She captioned the snaps: "Sir Carter and Rumi 1 month today" as she introduces her son and daughter to the world for the very first time.

But what are their names? Introducing them as 'Sir Carter and Rumi' would suggest only one of them was given the family surname Carter, unless his first name is 'Sir Carter'? But that would make the little boy's full name 'Sir Carter Carter'.

And if his first name is just 'Sir' - and his last name Carter, then what is Rumi's last name? If it's Carter, as would be expected, why did Beyonce not include it in her keenly awaited introduction to the world?

The Drunk In Love singer, 35, gave birth last month and has since kept a low-profile - only being spotted in public when she enjoyed a date with Jay Z at celebrity haunt Nobu in Malibu on Thursday.

“Bey and Jay are thrilled and have started sharing the news with their family and closest friends,” a source told People after they welcomed the new additions to the Carter family.

And while Beyonce and Jay never officially confirmed the news themselves, the singer’s dad Mathew Knowles shared a tweet congratulating his daughter and son-in-law.

“They’re here! #Beyonce #twins #JayZ #happybirthday,” he wrote.

Along with the message, he shared a picture of balloons, adding: "Happy birthday to the twins! Love, Granddad."

After giving birth, the twins were kept in hospital as a precaution after they arrived prematurely.

Sir Carter and Rumi were said to be "under the lights" - a common treatment for jaundice, which sometimes occurs in premature babies.

Meanwhile, to accommodate the new arrivals, the famous couple are believed to be renting a sprawling $54.5million California mansion complete with an infinity pool and separate house.

Known as La Villa Contenta, or the happy house, the main mansion boasts 14 bathrooms, 10 bedrooms and a 25ft infinity pool.

Furnishings inside the main villa include a 'museum-quality' Chippendale mirror and 18th century chandeliers carved from amethyst and rock crystal and an unusual 2,500-year-old lion's head bust that was discovered at the base of Mount Vesuvius in Italy.

Relaxing walks can be taken in the 6.3 acres of grounds including a rose garden with more than 1,000 flower bushes and a landscaped desert area.

Since welcoming the twins, Jay Z released his album 4:44 where he talks candidly about the power pair’s rocky relationship, including his past indiscretions.

On the title track he sings: "If my children knew, I don't even know what I would do. If they don't look at me the same I would probably die of all the shame."

More lyrics include: "I apologise, often womanise, took my child to be born, see through a woman's eyes. Took for these natural twins to believe in miracles. Took me too long for this song. I don't deserve you."

More recently, the rapper also admitted the couple’s marriage wasn’t “totally built” on the truth.

"This is my real life," he said during an interview that was released on Tidal. "I just ran into this place and we built this big, beautiful mansion of a relationship that wasn't totally built on the 100 percent truth and it starts cracking."

He continued: "Things start happening that the public can see. Then we had to get to a point of ‘OK, tear this down and let's start from the beginning.' It's the hardest thing I've ever done."

Beyonce and Jay had chosen not to reveal the gender of their twins ahead of the birth, which led to much speculation about whether it would be boys, girls or both.

In April, Bey’s mum Tina told Extra: “I would be happy with whatever God gives me. It’s the biggest blessing and I’m so excited.”
