Rumours have been swirling for weeks that their two-year relationship is on the rocks.

And new reports now claim that Liam Payne is more committed to his pop career than Cheryl and their son Bear - driving the couple apart.

According to The Sun, the One Direction star, 24, is the one who has 'gone cold' on their romance, after spending much of his time away from the singer, 34, and their baby son to promote his debut album.

Insiders told the paper on Wednesday that Liam has been busy travelling the world to pursue his solo career, causing him to drift from the former Girls Aloud singer.

The source said: 'Up until now everyone has assumed it's Cheryl who has gone cold on the relationship but it's the other way around.

'Liam appears more committed to a pop star lifestyle than becoming a real family man.'

Cheryl's reluctance to tie the knot is also thought to have added to their woes - with her wanting to avoid being associated with unsuccessful relationships, following her divorces from Ashley Cole and Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini.

'He was very keen to marry Cheryl early on but she wasn’t up for it because of her two failed marriages,' the source added. 'Since then he has been on the road, with Joan spending more time at the house.'

MailOnline has contacted both Liam and Cheryl's representatives for further comment.

The couple have been plagued by split rumours since February - with a source telling MailOnline they are struggling to find quality time together, as they juggle their busy careers and care for their 11-month-old son, Bear.

The insider claimed their relationship is 'strained', as the former One Direction star is spending nights away from home and touring the world with his solo album, while she looks after their baby son.

Cheryl is thought to be spending much of her time at home on her own with Bear, because she would rather stay in watching TV than go out to showbiz parties.

However, the pair attempted to quash the rumours by attending the BRIT Awards together the following week, and put on a very cosy display on the red carpet for cameras.

Yet, many still accused the pair of acting loved-up as a publicity stunt, to avoid further speculation about the state of their romance.

A source told The Sun: 'Cheryl and Liam's friends say things aren't good between them and have made it clear their relationship will soon end.

'But with a single to promote, Liam was not going to miss the opportunity, and having Cheryl with him gives him even more limelight.'

Clearly irked, Cheryl then took to Twitter to fiercely slam the claims, writing: 'Oh stop no one cares who's been speculatively arguing or not in their relationship use your platform to put something productive in your columns.

'I opened a centre this week that could help thousands of youth!!!! Oh and your 'stunt' theories are just ludicrous and a bit weird.'
