Former One Directioner Liam, 26, has now sweetly said that Cheryl, 36, is still incredibly important to him, but he struggled to understand her and her feelings properly when they were dating.

According to heat, Liam made the personal admission during his upcoming documentary, Ant Middleton and Liam Payne: Straight Talking, in which they travel to Namibia together.

He also discussed how becoming a father to Bear at the young age of 23 “messed him up” and how he feared he “wouldn't be enough.”

"And I think I built fatherhood up so much in my head that it kind of messed me up to start with. I started in a bad place with it.

"I think it spooked me out early on, and I was just worried I would not be enough to look after the both of them. They're so important to me — Cheryl as well.

"She's one of the most, if not the most, important people in my life. I'm lucky I have someone who understands what I'm going through."

He continued: "The one thing I was missing as a man in the relationship I had, was a level understanding about what she was feeling about stuff.

Liam is now dating model Maya Henry, 19, and the pair are regularly seen out at events together, unlike his private relationship with Cheryl.

Cheryl herself recently opened up about their son Bear’s birth and her “irrational” fears that he would be swapped at birth by doctors.

The Call My Name singer made the admission when she opened up about becoming a mum on Ru Paul and Michelle Visage’s podcast What’s The Tea.

Looking back on giving birth to Bear, Cheryl revealed: “When I had him, first of all I wouldn’t let the doctors take him out of the room.

“I read this story about two girls being swapped at birth and it was playing on my mind,” she said. “I was so irrational…I didn’t want anyone to take him.”

The former The X Factor judge also revealed she came up with her tot’s name while in hospital after giving birth to him.

After Michelle Visage asked about the inspiration for Bear’s name, she explained: “When I was in the hospital, he used to make these noises. We had specialists coming in to see

“It was just him. The midwife used to come in and say: ‘How’s the little bear?’ I didn’t have the name prior…”

“I couldn’t get the nickname out of my mind,” she said. “We toyed with others but I didn’t want him to be the third and such and such in his class. I wanted him to have a unique name.”
