Having picked up an Academy Award for her role as Queen Anne in Yorgos Lanthimos's absurd period drama The Favourite earlier this year, you'd think Olivia Colman would be feeling pretty confident about playing a monarch again in the eagerly-anticipated third season of Netflix's The Crown.

But she's surprisingly nervous; not about being called 'Your Majesty' or petting a Corgi every now and then, but of taking over as Queen Elizabeth II from original actor Claire Foy.

"It’s horrendous," she joked in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. "Everyone loves Claire, so I have got the worst job in the world at the moment.

"You’re saying all the worst things, thanks!

"It’s the same as any classical play you do — everyone will have already played that part before," she clarified, noting that, realistically, most iconic figures have been portrayed several times over.

"[Although] the first week, I did feel myself trying to do Claire impressions. 'What would she have done?'"

Foy's portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II was well-praised, earning her several award nominations and wins at both the Golden Globes and the Emmys.

In the two seasons she starred in, the show covered several important moments in the royal's life such as getting married in 1947, ascending to the throne at the age of 25 in 1952, navigating the retirement of Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill in 1955 and the birth of her four children.

Colman may be apprehensive, but showrunner Peter Morgan explained that he actually made a beeline for the Broadchurch star when Netflix gave him the go-ahead to recast going forward.

"Olivia Colman was a list of one," he told EW. "I think I wanted to know [she would play the part] even before negotiations were done for seasons 3 and 4.

"Obviously I’d have preferred her not to be playing another queen before," he laughed. "But it’s so different — such a different tone."

Elsewhere, Tobias Menzies is stepping into Matt Smith's shoes as Prince Phillip and Helena Bonham Carter adopts Vanessa Kirby's role as Princess Margaret.

The new trio's season is expected to cover events such as England winning the World Cup in 1966, the moon landing three years later and Margaret Thatcher moving in to 10 Downing Street.

The Crown returns on Sunday, November 17 on Netflix.
