The Hollywood star, who first played pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in 1986, looked every inch the dashing fighter pilot as he took off in the chopper.

The long-awaited sequel, to be called Top Gun: Maverick, is expected to be released in 2019.

Cruise has confirmed that the film is being made but refused to give any details about plot or cast.

“Stylistically, it's going to be the same. We're going to have the same score from Harold Faltermeyer.

“The aviators are back. We'll have the need for speed and big fast machines. It's going to be a competition film, like the first one, and it's going to be in the same vein but a progression. There's going to be aircraft carriers and there's going to be jets. I'm very excited, it's a great challenge.”

While Val Kilmer and Kelly McGillis have yet to be confirmed for the film, fans believe it would be impossible to make a sequel without the pair reprising their roles as Maverick's nemesis, Iceman, and flight instructor Charlotte Blackwood.

Asked if he was doing it during an online fan session, Kilmer said: “Hell yes - and what a hoot it will be.”

There has been much speculation that the plot will focus on the clash between traditional fighter pilots in jets and unmanned drones.

Last year producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a photo of himself with Cruise, saying: “Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend Tom Cruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2.”

It ended with Maverick getting together with McGillis's character and declaring that he wanted to become a Top Gun instructor.
