CBS is reinventing the Star Trek franchise for TV this year on the heels of the 50th anniversary of the original series, which blazed trails for science fiction and introduced so many indelible characters.

This new series takes place approximately a decade before Kirk and Spock's first mission on the Enterprise, and is told through the eyes of the Discovery's first officer Burnham (The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green).

Much of what we were previously told about the show from CBS is upended in this genuinely surprising new teaser. For starters, Jason Isaacs was announced to be playing the captain of the USS Discovery (and Burnham's superior officer)... but he's nowhere to be found in this footage.

Instead, Burnham follows Michelle Yeoh's Georgiou - previously referred to as the captain of rival Starfleet ship Shenzhou - onto the surface of an alien planet, provoking a military conflict with a nasty band of Klingons in the process.

Most interesting though is the significant presence of Starfleet's Vulcan ambassador Sarek (James Frain), who long-time fans will know as Spock's father. Sarek seems to be an extremely important figure in Burnham's life, as he's shown challenging her both as a child and adult.

"You will never learn Vulcan. You're tongue is too human," Sarek taunts the young Burnham.

This obviously raises some serious questions about Burnham's origin: Is she half-human, half-Vulcan? Was she simply raised on Vulcan? Was she perhaps one of Sarek's students at one time? At this stage, there's no clear answer.

In addition to today's teaser, CBS released an intriguing set photo showing Burnham visiting the previously-mentioned alien planet.

Star Trek: Discovery will air for an extended 15 episodes (an increase from the previously-announced 13) on CBS All Access in the US and Netflix in the UK this autumn.
