Former Bond girl Halle Berry has revealed she doesn’t believe 007 could ever be played by a woman in a film.

Halle, 50, said it wouldn’t be right to change the gender of the fictional 007 agent, and instead suggested creating a new female character.

“I want [women] to be tough but I don't know if Bond should be a woman,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I mean, that series is steeped in history, you know Ian Fleming's stories. I don't think you can change Bond to a woman.”

Berry, who played a Bond girl in the 2002 film Die Another Day, continued: “We can create a new Bond character that's a woman, and give her a new name, based on that theory, but I don't know if bond should be a woman.”

Her comments come days after it was reported that Cara Delevingne is “in talks” to star as a Bond girl in the upcoming film, which is set for release in November 2019.

A source told the Daily Mirror: “Cara ticks many boxes. She appeals to a younger audience, has screen fighting experience and is English too.

“They also feel she could play a fierce spy working alongside the main protagonist. who of course can play both sides. This role would not be arm candy, but a kick ass strong character.”

Delevingne addressed the rumours on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show, telling host Nick Grimshaw that she would be interested in the role.

She said: “Everyone's saying I'm meant to be a Bond girl but I'm like, 'no — I'm working on the James Bond aspect first.' I wouldn't mind being a Bond girl but I'm going for James.”

French director Yann Demange is reportedly the current frontrunner to direct the next instalment in the spy franchise.

Daniel Craig, who has enjoyed four outings as the 007 agent, is thought to be in the process of signing a contract to reprise his role after reportedly being convinced by producer Barbara Broccoli.
