It is currently enjoying a fresh renaissance in this year’s John Lewis Christmas advert and the favourite to top the charts just in time for the festivities.

Originally a B-side, Elton John's Your Song became one of the biggest pop songs in the world.

On Monday, the original handwritten lyrics to the song, penned by Bernie Taupin in blue ink, will go on sale for more than £250,000 at auction.

Bernie Taupin was just 17 when he wrote the song as a teenager in 1967 - and Elton John took just ten minutes to come up with the now unmistakable melody.

Handwritten

It was created one morning on the roof of 20 Denmark Street, London, where Elton was working as an office boy for a music publishing firm.

The songwriter was waiting there for Elton, which is how the line "I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss" materialised.

It wasn't released until 1970, and only then as a B-side, but its popularity prompted the record label to release it an A-side.

The lyrics are currently owned by Mr Taupin’s ex-wife, Maxine Taupin, who is selling the desirable manuscript at Bonhams’ Rock and Roll Memorabilia sale in New York.

Bonhams hasn’t given an estimate for the star lot only saying they expect it to sell for "low to middle six-figures".

Catherine Williamson, director of books and manuscripts at Bonhams, said: "Your Song played a pivotal role in projecting both Elton John and Bernie Taupin into the limelight.

World-famous

"It is a remarkable song that has stood the test of time and this original script highlights that its longevity is due to the mastery of the two artists.

"We think that the Your Song lyrics represent some of the greatest songwriting of the modern era.

"It is the perfect love song, expressing the all-consuming passion of first love, and is instantly recognisable from the first few notes of the piano.

"Elton John and Bernie Taupin thought it was a good song when they wrote it, but the record company didn't quite know what to do with it, releasing it as the B-side of Take Me to the Pilot.

"Only when curious fans and DJs turned the 45 over to play Your Song did its popularity spread."
