Meghan Markle's decision to tell members of the royal family she was pregnant at Princess Eugenie's wedding caused upset behind the scenes and left Prince Harry 'embarrassed', a new book claims.

The couple told the world they were expecting their first child on the eve of their royal tour of Australia and New Zealand.

The pair shared the happy news with close family at Harry's cousin's wedding a few days before.

In their book, Royals at War, investigative journalists Dylan Howard and Andy Tillett claim Meghan made the decision to tell people, which didn't go down well with Harry.

They claim it left the Duke of Sussex "embarrassed", and Princess Eugenie and her mum Sarah Ferguson "furious".

They write: "Meghan put her foot in it when she decided that it would be the ideal moment to announce that she and Harry were expecting their first child.

"This was a huge social gaffe, even if you were not a Royal – stealing the limelight from Eugenie, who was furious, as was her mother, Sarah."

The couple who now live in LA, were congratulated by the Queen, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and other members of the family when Archie arrived in May.

There were claims at the time that the announcement had upset the bride with US gossip website Radar Online claiming it had angered Eugenie, who was already dealing with stress of criticism over her pricey wedding.

"Eugenie disappeared for a while after Harry and Meghan told the Royal Family the news," an insider allegedly said.

"Any bride would have had their nose put out of joint by something like that."

At the time of the official announcement on October 15, many fans criticised Meghan and Harry for making the announcement so close to Eugenie's wedding.

Sarah Ferguson reacted by sharing photos of her daughter and new son-in-law just half an hour after Meghan and Harry made their official announcement.

She tweeted: "So proud of Eugenie and Jack #wedding" at 9.19am today, and also posted the same image on her official Instagram page.

There was a second tweet at 10.10am saying they were 'proud to welcome Jack to the York family'. A third tweet at 10.39am read: 'So proud of Eugenie'.

Meghan and Harry welcomed their baby boy on May 6, 2019, naming him Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

They opted against giving him an HRH title, with the hope that it would allow him to live a more 'normal' life away from the royal spotlight.

He is the most senior royal without a royal title.
