Gabrielle Aplin has said that she became famous without even realising it because she didn't know she had so many fans before being signed.

The 21-year-old singer-songwriter gained hordes of fans who watched her covers of hits such as Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Power Of Love on YouTube before she got a record deal.

She said: "I think my album going to number two [in the charts] showed me it was going well, which really surprised me.

"I had an online following before I was signed to a label, but really, I didn't know what it all meant. I didn't know what it meant to have someone view your video on YouTube, or what that translated to in real terms.

"It wasn't until I got a manager a couple of years ago who explained it to me that it started to sink in. Then someone pointed out I'd actually got loads of fans without really realising."

Gabrielle added that she got more nervous playing festivals than her own shows, no matter how big the audience got.

She said: "I get more nervous at festivals. At my own shows I just figure that people have bought tickets to come to see me so I don't get nervous really.

"You can't be negative about things like that, and the band are always so well-rehearsed, there's nothing to worry about. Going on tour is basically like sitting in a van with your friends for a month and doing something really fun each night."
