Idris Elba has promised a Luther movie is "definitely on the cards".

The Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom actor starred as DCI John Luther and worked as a producer on the hit BBC series. Creator Neil Cross has previously revealed he has written a film spin-off and Idris told Kate Garraway on ITV's Lorraine he and Neil are currently in talks to get the project off the ground.

Idris said: "That is definitely on the cards, we've been really lucky that Luther is [so popular]... it's a small show, we did four episodes and we got such a massive following worldwide, so Neil Cross and I are aiming to do the film.

"I'm speaking to him as we speak... and we're trying to pull it together. It's an ambitious project because it's a television show but we suspect that it's going to be as successful on TV and on film as well."

Luther's third series finale - believed to be the show's final episode - ended with John ditching his trademark coat and departing with Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson).

Neil previously said of the film : "It will follow his career in the earlier days, when he is still married to Zoe, and the final scene in the film is the first of the initial TV series."

But the writer has also revealed his hopes of creating a spin-off show featuring femme fatale Alice. He said: "I don't think Alice and Luther's story is over."
