Jon Favreau has revealed he got his hands dirty, cooking for his Chef role.

The Iron Man star, who plays restaurant cook Carl Casper in the indie comedy, attended culinary school and trained with chef Roy Choi.

"[Working with Choi] really helped me not just as an actor but as a director to understand the food world," he told the Hollywood Reporter at the film's premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, where he was joined by cast members Bobby Cannavale, Sofia Vergara, Oliver Platt and John Leguizamo.

The film, which also stars Jon's Iron Man co-stars Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansson, and Dustin Hoffman, was directed, written and produced by Jon. It is the first film on which he has done all three jobs since 2001's Made.

"After doing a lot of big movies with a lot of concerns revolving around the studios and the politics of marketing and release schedules, it was nice to do something very small where I didn't have to answer to anybody but myself," he said.

"I started making films of this size - acting in movies that I wrote and directed. I see people like Louis CK, Larry David and Lena Dunham doing it and every time I watched their shows, I would think about how much fun it was and how much I missed it.

"So when the script for Chef popped into my head, I figured it was a good opportunity to try that again and it was one of the best experiences I can remember having."

Jon's character finds his passion for food reignited when he opens a food truck, which the filmmaker opted to do in real life.

"We take the food truck cross-country from Miami to California. It was a real throw-back. When you're on the road with a small crew, it feels like you're living the movie," the 47-year-old said.
