Nathan Fillion has revealed his surprise at the praise he received for Much Ado About Nothing.

The Canadian actor, best known for starring in crime drama Castle, admitted he wasn't prepared for the rave reviews he got for his portrayal of Dogberry in Joss Whedon's adaptation of the William Shakespeare comedy.

"It was so kind and so generous," he told Digital Spy of the fans-led campaign to get him some awards recognition.

He continued: "That role could not have worked out better for me. I was terrified to do it, which made it of course very, very exciting.

"I was in incredibly good hands with Joss and the rest of this incredible cast that he'd assembled and that being my very first foray into Shakespeare, the whole experience has been incredibly positive for me.

The 42-year-old added: "People have been very kind about how much they enjoyed that piece. For the amount of work I actually did on that film - I worked an afternoon on one weekend, two days on another weekend - I've received more accolades than I could say is fair."

Nathan, who starred in Joss' TV series Firefly and Buffy The Vampire Slayer, plays crime author-turned-police consultant Richard Castle in Castle.
