Kit Harington brought the drama of a destroyed civilisation to London for a special screening of his latest film Pompeii.

He stars as slave-turned-gladiator Milo who is fighting to save his beloved from the clutches of a corrupt Roman senator as Vesuvius erupts and the city crumbles around them.

The actor was on the red carpet to promote the film with his co-star Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje who plays fellow gladiator Atticus.

Kit, who also stars in fantasy adventure TV series Game Of Thrones, said: "I've done stuff similar to this genre with Game Of Thrones - holding a sword, sword fighting, kind of action hero stuff - and I was enjoying it, so I wanted to do more."

He continued: "I'd love to go back and tell my drama school self that he's going to be a gladiator, or a medieval warrior. I don't think you really know what life's going to throw at you, especially in the acting world.

"That's why I'm enjoying it so much, why I enjoyed this film. It's such an alien thing to think of myself doing."

Pompeii also stars Emily Browning as Kit's character's love interest Cassia, and Kiefer Sutherland as Roman senator Corvus who is trying to force her to marry him.

The film is released in cinemas on April 30.
