Jessica Chastain could be set to play Marilyn Monroe in a film about her life.

The Oscar-nominated actress is on the verge of signing up to star in the film adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates' novel Blonde, sources involved in the project have told movie blog The Wrap.

Blonde is an "imagined memoir" about the Hollywood icon, which plays with history and delves into Marilyn's mind as Oates imagined it to be.

The film is being directed by New Zealander Andrew Dominik, whose previous works include The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford and Killing Them Softly starring Brad Pitt. Brad's company Plan B is expected to produce the movie.

Brad starred with Jessica in Terrence Malick's The Tree Of Life in 2011 and, according to The Wrap, has been instrumental in persuading her to tackle the challenging role of Marilyn Monroe.

The project was first announced in 2010, with Naomi Watts linked to the part.

Michelle Williams was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of troubled Hollywood starlet Monroe in 2011's My Week With Marilyn, based on the memoir of British filmmaker Colin Clark, who worked as her assistant on a film at Pinewood Studios in the 1950s.
