Lindsay Lohan has announced that she is to star in an upcoming psychological thriller.

The US actress - who is rebuilding her movie career after years of substance abuse and legal problems - will also produce the film, which will be called Inconceivable.

Li-Lo opened up about the project at a press conference at the Sundance Film Festival, telling the crowd: "I've never had the honour of coming here before... to bring something to the table, which is starting fresh for me.

"It's a nice change to be back among people that are in the industry that I've been in since I was a kid."

The 27-year-old said of her producer role: "It's therapeutic for me to throw myself into something that really excites me and something that I love to do so much. There's nothing better than having seen all of your ideas and thoughts that you've been thinking about to come to fruition and to share that with people.

"I think that's why I've always loved making movies so much. So it's nice to be able to have another position in the film rather than just showing up and being on the set."

She described the film as a psychological thriller about a woman trying to reclaim something she lost.

No director or co-stars have been announced, but Lindsay said she "would die" if Jessica Lange would consider a part in Inconceivable, which starts shooting in March.

Lindsay was joined by producer and financier Randall Emmett, who called the star "one of the greatest young actresses of her generation".

The news conference was also filmed by a crew from Oprah Winfrey's OWN network, which is making a reality TV series about Lindsay.
