Bruce Dern has paid tribute to the director who gave him the role of a lifetime.

The veteran star is nominated for a best actor Oscar for his role as Woody Grant in Alexander Payne's black and white drama Nebraska.

His performance has already secured him the Best Actor honour at the Cannes film festival, as well as a slew of award nominations back in America.

The Great Gatsby star also picked up the Modern Master Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and speaking on the red carpet beforehand, Bruce said he owed a great debt to his director.

He told me on the first day not to show him anything but to let him find it so instead of having to over-perform or push, I had confidence he was going to come around and find those moments.

"The greatest gift he has for actors is he keeps the camera on you long enough to see the emotions star to develop, he doesn't cut to speed up the movie.

Bruce's Great Gatsby co-star Robert Redford was honoured with the American Riviera Award earlier in the festival and Bruce said he still admires the actor a great deal.

"In all my years in this industry he is the only person who ever dreamed a dream and pulled it off and put his money where his mouth is because he created the Sundance film festival and a movie like Nebraska wouldn't have been created without Sundance."

Bruce will next be seen in drama Cut Bank, which also features Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth.
