Mike Newell is set to direct the film version of The Day Of The Triffids.

The British filmmaker will take the reins on the big-screen adaptation of John Wyndham's post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel, reported Deadline.

The film, which has been adapted by Neil Cross, is about a plague of blindness on the world following a comet shower, letting an aggressive species of alien plants, known as triffids, emerge.

The 1951 book has previously been adapted for various mediums, including a 1962 film starring Howard Keel and Nicole Maurey, three radio drama series and two TV series in 1981 and 2009.

Joely Richardson and Dougray Scott starred in the latest TV mini-series.

Mike, who directed Four Weddings And A Funeral, Donnie Brasco and Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, last sat in the director's chair for Great Expectations, starring Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter and Jeremy Irvine.

The Bafta-winning filmmaker's next film is historical drama Reykjavik, which is about the 1986 Reykjavik Summit during the Cold War.

Michael Douglas plays US President Ronald Reagan, with Christoph Waltz as President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev and Frank Langella as US government official Paul Nitze.
