The Oscars will feature a tribute to big-screen heroes, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have revealed.

The duo said that the 86th Annual Academy Awards will celebrate heroes of past and present - superheroes, real-life heroes and animated ones - as well as the filmmakers who have brought them to life, reported The Wrap.

"We wanted to unify the show with an entertaining and emotional theme," Craig and Neil said in a joint statement.

"People around the world go to the movies to be inspired by the characters they see on the screen. By celebrating the gamut of heroes who have enriched our moviegoing experience, we hope to create an evening of fun and joy.

"And that includes the filmmakers and actors who take risks and stimulate us with provocative subjects and daring characters. They are all heroes in the cinematic landscape."

An exhibition, The Oscars Celebrates Movie Heroes, accompanying the theme will be on display in the Grand Lobby Gallery of its Beverly Hills headquarters from January 17 until March 5.

This will include films focused on real-life heroes such as Gandhi and Silkwood, superheroes (Superman, The Dark Knight), animated stars (Shrek, The Incredibles), action heroes (Seven Samurai, Gladiator), literary heroes (To Kill A Mockingbird, The Grapes Of Wrath) and more.

Ellen DeGeneres is set to host the Oscars ceremony, which takes place on March 2 from the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood and Highland Centre.

"Of course, there will be no shortage of comedy with Ellen DeGeneres as our host," the producers said. "There may also be a few musical surprises along the way."

Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor in the Marvel films, will announce the Oscar nominations on January 16 with Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
