Tahar Rahim has revealed he would like to play larger-than-life characters, like Jack Nicholson's anti-hero in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

The French actor said he would like to follow in the footsteps of Jack, who won an Oscar for his performance as Randle Patrick 'Mac' McMurphy in Milos Forman's big-screen adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel.

"I would like to play someone bigger-than-life in the right movie, someone who seems impossible in real life but you can believe them on screen. Like Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest . But we don't have these characters in French [films]," he said.

Tahar, who starred in A Prophet, next plays a shadowy customs officer in The Informant.

" Those characters who are troubled offer you more space to play and be someone else. This is a large arc to play, so that's why I like it," he revealed.

"I never heard of that story before until I had this proposition. I talked to people and they told me it was a famous story in the 80s, and then I learnt more."

The 32-year-old was thrilled with the opportunity to reunite with writer Abdel Raouf Dafri, who he previously worked with on A Prophet and French TV series La Commune.

"When I saw that Abdel was writing it, I was reassured in a way. I was like, 'He's my friend, I know his talent, I know it's going to be something good'. I was happy to get back with him. He's a good friend now, like a brother," he explained.

Tahar admitted it was easy to leave his shady alter-ego behind, saying: "It's not hard now. I had this problem before but now I go home, take off my clothes and I'm me."
