Jennifer Lawrence and the stars of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay have had to abandon filming after an ice storm hit the set.

The two-part final instalment of the dystopian adventure movie was shooting on location in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, indoors at the 200 Peachtree event space, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

But snow, sleet and freezing rain have hit the area, creating "extremely hazardous" driving conditions and led to more than 400,000 homes and businesses losing electricity.

The storm shut down production on four TV shows that film in Atlanta - The CW's Vampire Diaries and The Originals, and Lifetime's Drop Dead Diva and Devious Maids. And it is believed work on Mockingjay was also effected.

Some of the stars of the movie posted tweets and pictures online.

Wes Chatham posted a snowy photo, writing, "the streets of Atlanta are deserted". Willow Shields wrote: " Big sweaters snow mornings and confused faces. Apocalypse #2 in Atlanta!"

Production on Mockingjay had already been hit by the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman, who played Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games movies.

Although Lionsgate has said Hoffman's death would have "no impact" on production, the actor still had one major scene left to film in Mockingjay - Part 2.
