Meryl Streep has revealed she got in touch with Emma Thompson, after realising that she hadn't received an Oscar nomination.

The Mamma Mia! star, who has received her 18th Oscar nod for her performance in August: Osage County, told Ellen DeGeneres on her US chat show that she emailed the British actress.

"There were so many performances this year that were great. I'm thinking of my friend Emma who wasn't nominated," the actress said.

"I was really shocked. And I wrote her a long, heartfelt email saying how bad I felt. And she wrote me back and said, 'Good'. There were a lot of surprises and injustices," she added.

Meryl, who has broken records as the actress with the most Oscar nominations, admitted she is still surprised by the nod. She was in bed when she found out the news.

"I was dead asleep, because I didn't think I had a chance. You read the papers, and they all say, 'She doesn't have a chance'. I'm so old news," she said.
