Wetsuit was horrendous for Imrie

Celia Imrie has revealed that the wetsuit she wore in The Love Punch was a nightmare.

The 61-year-old actress dons the unflattering scuba gear, complete with flippers and mask, for a scene in the comedy, along with her co-stars Emma Thompson, Pierce Brosnan and Timothy Spall.

"The script is so inviting and we were so excited on day one, and you read, 'All four in wetsuits' and think, 'That's fine'," she said.

"You completely forget about the hell it is to get on and then walk around in these flippers. You've got nothing to hide behind and you think, 'I'm glad this is a comedy'."

Celia, who has a teenage son Angus, said she can relate to her character, the happily married mother Penelope in Joel Hopkins' comedy caper, although she admitted she can be embarrassing at times.

"It's a very weird thing because it's such a wonderful thing to be a mother. And you think that your child is part of you - they're not. They're absolutely not. They're their own people," she said.

"In fact, I drive Angus mad by asking, 'Angus, what's it like to be you?' and he replies, 'Not again, Mum.' The thing is, he's a completely different person and that's what you realise."

She added: "We (Emma and I) are so lucky because we love what we do and we have children too. That's huge. He tells me to do something to my hair and to not wear certain colours."
