In showbiz circles, their marriage was to be envied - a squeaky clean 23 year romance with no hint of any infidelities or sleaze.

Fans were rooting for the celebrity couple even after brave Ant McPartlin admitted a devastating addiction to prescription painkillers and promptly shipped himself off to rehab in America this summer.

Just eight months later Ant called time on their marriage in a brutal Saturday night statement, making it clear who severing ties.

"“In response to the recent speculation in the media, Ant is very sad to announce that, after 11 years, he is ending his marriage to Lisa McPartlin," his statement read.

Sources close to Ant maintained he decided to split "for his health" and is determined to "take care of Lisa" both financially and mentally. Since Ant returned from rehab, before his jungle stint in November, he shunned the £6million marital home for "some space" and moved into a rental flat streets away.

It is thought the pair had been locked in emotional crisis talks before Ant, 42, jetted off to Oz with Lisa maintaining she wanted their marriage to last the course.

Sources said Lisa was determined to save their marriage and understandably became emotional during their chats - something Ant referenced, saying it: "I’ve put Lisa through hell with mood swings and depression and how it affects you. This kind of stuff puts strains on any marriage."

Publically, Lisa made sure she was telling fans the pair were not estranged.

In November, Lisa slammed those who suggested she was living apart from Ant, saying: “I’m not estranged, thank-you.”

Dealing out the information via a series of hashtags, Lisa wrote: “#writewhatyouwant #haventbeentoOzfor10years #ihaveajob #allaloadofmadeupshit #imnotestrangedthank-you #asyouwere.”

Then in an emotional outburst, suggesting her upset, the Strictly makeup artist responded to a fan that suggested she was 'throwing her marriage away'.

The troll wrote: "Can't believe you're throwing your marriage away after all them years. I've been addicted to codeine and unless you have been there you wouldn't understand waking up in morning kidneys hurting for the habit to be fed educate yourself about it first @LisaAmakeup."

She responded: "Educate yourself first love and get your facts rights. You don’t know!! x."

But it appears Lisa became resigned to the fact her marriage was over during Christmas after Ant jetted back to Newcastle and she was left in London.

In a telling New Years tweet Lisa shared a meme of a woman dragging a bag of radioactive waste labelled 2017 into the bin - hinting at the pain behind the last 12 months.

Fans have praised her for her dignity and Lisa responded "thank you" to a fan who said she should receive an award for the most dignified person on Twitter.

Now we can only wait and see what Lisa, who has a group of strong family, friends and colleagues, does next.
