Doctor Who's former showrunner Steven Moffat has revealed a Torchwood reference from the series that unfortunately didn't make the final cut.

Fans of the show have been learning about some exciting new secrets and Easter eggs during a recent spate of classic episode watch-alongs.

The latest one – this time for 2014's 'Listen' – was no exception, as Moffat shared the script for a cut scene that saw the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) head into a "spooky library".

The dialogue reveals that the place is home to the "rarest, most important, most dangerous texts in human history", and the library used to be in Torchwood's possession before the Doctor took it.

"I HAD TO CUT A WHOLE SCENE FOR THE BUDGET," Moffat explained on Twitter. Agh, those pesky budgets!

During the watch-along, the writer also revealed a mistake he made when referencing a line from William Hartnell's Doctor.

"'Fear make companions of all of us!' The very first time the Drr is nice to anyone in Dr Who, those are his words (we had to wait till ep 3.) Always loved the line, and the kindness that first emerged with it. This was my love letter to it," he explained.

Knew it was wrong, but couldn't let go of the way I'd misremembered it for so long. Like, was the DG gonna fine me cos I misquoted Hartnell. Drunk with power, I was."

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US, and will return for a festive special.
