Reddit user weedmoney666 recently explained why he thinks Eleven herself, played by Millie Bobby Brown, could be the antagonist next season. In the season 3 finale, El was the new target of perennial evil force, Mind Flayer. During the episode, Mind Flayer grabs El by the ankle, before she's ultimately saved by her friends. In other words, a dangerous precedent has been set up for Eleven. Every other character who had been infected by the Mind Flayer was ultimately controlled by the super villain. Billy (Dacre Montgomery) and Will (Noah Schnapp) are both prime examples.

The user posits that Eleven could follow suit in season 4—and that her inability to use her powers at season's end has something to do with it. Finally, that ominous shadow in the final scene? The user says it signals an Eleven vision or flashback, reminiscent of Will's when he was infected and trapped in the Upside Down.
