BBC One's drama The Replacement had a huge – and fairly mixed – reaction from viewers after the finale, but it seems the creepy show could have ended completely differently, according to its creators.

The story saw Paula Reece (played by This is England'sVicky McClure) – who was maternity cover for Ellen Rooney (Morven Christie) – try to steal her job and family.

People died, secret bonking was revealed and poor old Ellen shunned just about everyone she knew in a bid to prove that Paula was up to no good.

The penultimate episode saw Ellen confront Paula and reveal that she had been pretending her long-dead daughter was actually alive.

Then in the finale, Ellen lost her job, and Paula pinched her husband after convincing him that his wife had had an affair. Then Paula chucked herself down some stairs to frame Ellen and the poor woman was banned from seeing her newborn Leah by the police.

Yikes. Not exactly exactly as chirpy as Balamory, but the show's writer Joe Ahearne told Radio Times that the original ending had a far greater twist.

He said: "In a very, very, very early version of the story, we flirted with Paula's daughter being the one who did the deed.

"We discussed that a bit because we thought that could be fun. Then the explanation for Paula's behaviour would be she's trying to protect her child and she's fighting for her child."

"But, the more we thought about it we thought, well, really the drama is between these two women, so it's really got to be Paula at the end because it's about the two of them."

Meanwhile it's also been confirmed that The Replacement WON'T receive a second series.

*Sadface*

At least Vicky can get cracking on more This Is England now, yeah? YEAH? Please say "yeah", Shane Meadows.
