That is so 2016.

The latest coffee trend taking Instagram by storm is 3D latte art.

Are they ridiculous? Yes - surely your coffee will be practically cold by the time the design is finished.

But are the creations also weirdly cute and rather adorable? Yes.

The 3D latte art is made with milk froth and decorated with chocolate - a steady hand is also a necessity.

It’s thought the trend originated in Japan.

3D latte artist Kohei Matsuno is one of the best known 3D latte artists.

He says it takes him about four minutes to create a frothy sculpture.

“People usually enjoy cute latte art the most, but recently I enjoy making pieces that surprise,” Matsuno told Sprudge.

“I like watching people’s reaction to the unexpected.”

Elephants, cats, dogs, fish - most of the designs feature animals.

Unsurprisingly, they’re going down a treat on social media.

Some people may argue creating 3D latte art is a ridiculous waste of time for something you’ll drink in as many minutes.

But the creations are cute, creative and fun, so why not?

Who knows what type of coffees we’ll be Instagramming next...
