'I went to the kebab shop in London that has almost perfect reviews for their big portions and everyone was right'

Kebab shops and takeaways aren't a difficult find in London so it seems odd to title any one as a 'hidden gem' when everyone in its area will be passing by daily. But I'd like to instead lovingly refer to this special Turkish spot as a 'well-kept secret' by its locals. Everyone who knows about it loves it and those who don't are absolutely missing out.

EaTurkish has a whopping 4.6 star rating on Google and 4.5 on Tripadvisor with reviews praising it for serving the "best Turkish food in London" and being "just like what I eat in Turkey." Another even said: "You will struggle to find a better kebab shop... Haven’t eaten a bad thing here, and as a Turk, I endorse it as genuine kebabs!"

However, I have to admit, I was sceptical at first. Is this just the best takeaway on offer for the people of Charlton? Or is it actually a South London Turkish treasure? Naturally, as always, I had to go and find out for myself.

EaTurkish in Charlton sits on a tiny corner along the busy Woolwich Road, rather unassumingly as it appears as yet another average kebab shop from the outside. But the inside is nothing like the late-night haunts I'm used to digging into a box of chips in; instead it's excellently clean and well-kept. A few wooden pieces of furniture and a bench replace the usual silver metal chairs and an impressive counter spans the wall - boasting rainbows of dips and salads.

Greeted by smiles from the busy staff already inundated with takeaway and lunch orders at noon, I asked for one of their most popular kebabs. An order they have listed in a proudly framed article displayed in the window, titling them as Greenwich's most popular lockdown order on Deliveroo in 2020. The sought-after kebab in question is of course the Chicken Shish. And Greenwich, what a delicious lockdown dinner some of you were having.

As I perched on a stool for the ten minute wait, the chef confidently assured me: "I'm making you a feast," as he perfectly placed dips on to my plate. And wow, did he mean it. For a bargain £9.90, I got a Chicken Shish Kebab Meal with fresh bread, rice, salad, coleslaw, tzatziki, hummus and ezme.

Steaming from inside the pocket of soft dough, large chunks of chicken were tender and succulent. Humming with the likes of cumin, chilli and garlic, each bite was a total upgrade from the bland and dry meats I often suffer the disappointment of elsewhere. Sweet slices of onion and silky grilled squares of peppers sat amongst the chicken, just elevating the beautiful Turkish flavours further.

The best part for me ,however was actually, that incredible, unbelievable, amazing bread. Such a simple thing but done so well. Made at the end of the counter, the thick and fluffy pitta was easily the best Turkish bread I've ever eaten. It had this salty crust that balanced the fluffy inside was still hot from the oven. I'd order batches of the stuff every week if I could.

And it was the perfect vessel for shovelling heaps of earthy hummus and tangy tzatziki into my mouth - pure joy for me. The ezme, a mix mostly of tomato, fresh coriander and chilli, gave a real whack of fire to the kebab that, whilst welcome, was a shock to my taste buds.

Acting as a buffer between my dips and kebab, a mound of rice held a small sprinkling of chickpeas. This really was a platter of Turkish flavours. Almost tasting like a British rice pudding, the soft rice was sweet and buttery. Topping it all off, a big dumping of crispy lettuce, peppery red cabbage, zingy pink onions, fiery fresh chillies and juicy tomatoes added some greenery and further freshness to my feast. Every inch of this impressive plate offered another colour, another taste, another texture and another sheer moment of joy.

After I'd overindulged in my substantial feast, I still couldn't resist but takeaway a little box of baklava (£3.50). Devoured within moments of getting back to the office, they were little flaky, crispy, nutty parcels of the joy. The sweet pistachio filling squashed in my mouth as syrup oozed out. It was the perfect finish to an incredible feast of a lunch.

I'm ashamed I judged this place before getting there. In my eyes it's in no way just an average local kebab shop. It's a proper high-quality restaurant. Everything I ate was absolutely banging and would be served up in a much smaller portion at a much higher price in most central eateries.

This is a total bargain of a lunch and EaTurkish deserve every ounce of praise they receive; their food truly is outstanding. It is so worth the travel to get there, I promise you.

You can find EaTurkish at 172 Woolwich Rd, London SE7 7RA.
