More men are undergoing cosmetic procedures than ever before, according to new research.

A new report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows that more men are embracing the idea of seeking surgical assistance to enhance their physical appearance, boost their confidence and stave off the "dad bod," with research revealing that more than 1.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed on men in 2018, a 29 per cent increase since 2000.

"Obviously, men don't go through the same physical changes that women experience during pregnancy and post-pregnancy, but their lifestyle does change, which can impact their appearance," said Dr. Alan Matarasso, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. "Diet and exercise patterns fluctuate, and they don't sleep as much. Men notice their body changes due to ageing and parenting, and it starts to look completely different in their thirties and forties. That is the point of a Daddy-Do-Over."

More than 200,000 surgical procedures were performed on men in 2018, with the most popular being rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping.

Eyelid surgery came in second, followed by liposuction. Breast reduction came in fourth with 24,000 procedures, a 22 per cent increase since 2000, and hair transplantation came in fifth, up 17 per cent since 2017.

Dr. Matarasso claims men are embracing non-surgical or minimally invasive procedures as much as women, with nearly half a million Botox procedures being performed on male patients and more than 100,000 men having filler injections to reduce the signs of ageing.

"Regardless of the reason though, I always stress the importance of consulting with a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Our unique training and qualifications allow us to perform cosmetic procedures of all types. We are committed to providing plastic surgery patients with the safest outcomes, and we want them to have peace of mind as we help them achieve their aesthetic goals."
