There's vanilla as a natural air freshener, lemon juice for whitening clothes, and vinegar for cleaning, well, pretty much anything. But what she did with a stale slice of bread has to be the strangest, yet savviest, of all.

When de-crusted and rolled into a ball, a slice of white or rye bread becomes a natural eraser. The spongy substance is a superstar at lifting smudges from walls, wallpaper, kitchen cupboards, and more. In fact, before rubber, the original erasers for graphite pencils were moist bread crumbs. How does it work? "The gluten in the bread absorbs dirt and stains," Toni Hammersley writes in The Complete Book of Clean.

To lift marks, don't rub: Just dab gently at the surface with your rolled-up bread ball, and voila!

You can also use bread to soak up spills, clean out your coffee grinder, dust and polish pictures, and pick up broken glass (gently press a slice down to get the tiniest shards).

And, of course, it has many culinary uses: absorbing the burnt flavour from overdone dishes, thickening soups and sauces, deterring tears when chopping onions (cover the blunt edge of the knife with a slice), and freshening up food in the fridge.

Bread is one of the oldest tricks in the book. But it's stood the test of time - even as modern innovations have threatened to take its place. And unlike store-bought products, which can contain harsh chemicals, bread won't scratch or take the finish off your surfaces.
