The kitchen sink is one of the lead culprits in encouraging bacteria to grow, so how often should it be cleaned to keep it germ-free?

Hygiene expert, Lisa Yakas, has revealed to Bon Appétit that we should be disinfecting our kitchen sink at least once a week.

If you have been handling raw meat or scrubbing dirty potatoes in the sink, however, you'll need to up your cleaning game and get scrubbing immediately. This will help stop the spread of dangerous germs.

But make sure to do this once all the bits of food have been cleared away, as any remaining debris can carry germs.

For the best level of hygiene, Yakas, who is a microbiologist and senior certification project manager of food equipment at public health company NSF International, suggests giving the sink a deep clean once a month too, and de-clogging the drain. This can be done by pouring diluted bleach or drain unblocker down the plughole.

Sounds like a household chore worth enduring to us.
