And it might be less often than you'd think.

After a Mumsnet user has sparked a massive debate on the online parenting forum by saying that she thinks pyjamas should be washed/changed after every wear – something that the majority didn't agree with – Prima.co.uk decided to get an expert answer.

Well, according to Verity Mann, Head of Testing at the Good Housekeeping Institute, once a week is more than enough!

'Pyjamas should be washed after a few good nights' sleep,' she tells us. 'If you shower before you go to bed, you can wait a few extra nights between washings: I'd say once a week, so every seven days.'

The only exception to the once-a-week rule? If you've been ill or tend to get really hot at night...

'If you're a sweaty sleeper you should increase this,' Mann says. 'If someone has been ill, wash them straight away on as high a temperature as the care label allows.'

So, now we know.
