Buenos Aires Just Hosted Its First-Ever Empanada Championship

In Argentina, empanadasreign supreme. On July 9, Buenos Aires hosted the inaugural La Fiesta de la Empanada. 15 professional chefs from allover the country competed. Each chef prepared 12 empanadas from their province. They were judged on theirdough, filling, fold and crimptechnique, and baking. The judges were renowned Argentine food critics, chefs, and other empanada champions. Over 150,000 peoplewatched the competition. María del Carmen "Chacha" Vicario from Tunuyán, Mendoza, made the winning empanadas. She filled them with thinly sliced beef tenderloin, onions, green olives, hard boiled eggs, and scallions. Then, she bakedthem in a clay oven. It's a traditional Argentine take, and obviously a winning recipe. Congratulations chef!
